mostly a good J Arthur

drive-by readings

Knight and Squire #1 (DC)
"For Six, Part One"
Paul Cornell
Jimmy Broxton
Guy Major
Steve Wands
Yanick Paquette/Michel Lacombe/Nathan Fairbairn (cover)
Billy Tucci/Hi-Fi (variant cover)
what we learned: England's Batman and Robin get their own book, and who better to chronicle their adventures but British writer Paul Cornell (i totally miss Captain Britain and MI:13). in this first issue, Knight and Squire whoop it up in their version of The Bar With No Name, only this bar is a DMZ for both heroes and villains (and quite a few arcane characters only a British writer can imagine in his sleep). even Wildcat stops by for a pint or two. everything's hunky dory until somebody starts a fire.
oh shit moment: you could hear a pin drop before everything breaks loose. and artist Jimmy Broxton loves himself too much.
what's next: more Britannia!

ggg

drive-by readings

Hawkeye & Mockingbird #4 (Marvel)
"Ghosts, Part 4: Unnatural Histories"
Jim McCann
David Lopez
Alvaro Lopez
Nathan Fairbairn
Cory Petit
Paul Renaud (cover)

what we learned: surviving Crossfire's attack, Clint and Bobbie hatch a plan to draw him and the new Ghost Rider to them. a night at the museum ensues and the couple lure their nemesis to the Nevada desert (thank God for that douchey Scientist Supreme!) to face the ghosts of their past.
oh shit moment: Hamilton Slade is back!
what's next: will Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch show up too?

see, kids, you should still get an edu-kay-shun! temping at McDonald's ain't cutting it.

walking on sunshine

drive-by readings

Curse of the Mutants: Blade one-shot (Marvel)
"The Light at the End"
Duane Swierczynski
Tim Green
Nathan Fairbairn
Dave Sharpe
Dave Wilkins (cover)

what we learned: why is Blade in Frisco, cozying up to the X-Men? well, he learned he's not the only Daywalker around and his crew of vampire slayers folded faster than an origami championship ensemble. and current big evil kahuna Xarus let it slip that they like mutants. a-ha.
oh shit moment: did i mention that posse of Blade's which went down faster than a waterfall? the Skrull Kill Krew would last longer. or Team Jacob.
what's next: if they were going to remake the Blade movie (historically, Marvel's first big movie hit) for the new generation, who would you want to play the role? Nelsan Ellis? Jaden Smith? that kid in Everybody Hates Chris?

freaks and geeks has been renewed!

drive-by readings

Hawkeye & Mockingbird #3 (Marvel)
"Ghosts, Part 3: Lex Talionis"
Jim McCann
David Lopez
Alvaro Lopez
Nathan Fairbairn
Cory Petit
Paul Renaud (cover)

what we learned: with her mother in critical condition, Bobbi goes on the hunt with Dominic Fortune and a pissed and confused Hawkeye in tow. despite the obvious makings of a trap, our intrepid couple fall into it anyway.
oh shit moment: explosions. with the villains walking away, Hollywood-style.
what's next: barbecued birds, anyone?

Darth Maul's leaning toward suing ...

target locked on

drive-by readings

Hawkeye & Mockingbird #2 (Marvel)
"Ghosts Part 2: Rumors of Death"
Jim McCann
David Lopez
Alvaro Lopez
Nathan Fairbairn
Cory Petit
Paul Renaud (cover)

what we learned: bringing your ex-wife's mom to meet your ex-wife, when the former thinks she's dead, is a brilliant idea. oh, and of course Jim McCann mines the past i love when he brings back that rapist Ghost Rider - in the form of a descendant, of course.
oh shit moment: mother in law or ex-mother-in-law is no longer either, thanks to Crossfire.
what's next: Hawkeye in a Sky Cycle! versus Crossfire and Death Throws! its 1986 all over again!!

Clint can't kill Norman Osborn but he can make his mother-in-law slap his wife.

winged-footers ex-wives

drive-by readings

Dark Reign - The List: X-Men #1 (Marvel)
Matt Fraction
Alan Davis
Mark Farmer
Nathan Fairbairn
Joe Caramagna
so is ol' cranky Subby an X-Man now? how the mighty have fallen. and to add insult to injury, ex-girlfriend Marrina (who's already an ugly fish-worm thing literally) is remodified and enhanced by no less than Norman Osborn himself to piss off his Royal Highness. and when i say enhanced, i don't mean no Nip/Tuck stuff here.

fans, remind me or educate me again:
- even with the influx of mutants or non-mutants to Utopia, how is it that they can have fresh veggies, fruits and farmers' markets?
- weren't Namor's people in Latveria? what did i miss?
- was Namor wearing that X-logo belt or did he slip it on while his back was turned to Emma?
- aren't you all happy there are no more dead X-Men? Magik is back, Psylocke is back, even Necrosha says all of Genosha will come back ... oh, wait, Jean Grey is still dead.
- isn't it a bit creepy to have Psylocke (possessing Bobby) to be saying (in tandem with him) "i can't hold it ... it's too big ..." (you sneaky Matt Fraction, you)
- do you like Osborn's long-haired fashion model personal assistant? of course, i am referring to Robert Reynolds, a.k.a. the Sentry.

so the score is, Osborn 2, people on The List, 1.

drive-by readings: House of M: Masters of Evil #1

yes, we're all posing on a rooftop so a Sentinel can take us out in one shot
House of M: Masters of Evil #1 (Marvel)
"Chapter 1: This Thing of Ours"
Christos N. Gage
Manuel Garcia
Jesse Delperdang
Nathan Fairbairn
Dave Sharpe
Mike Perkins/Guru eFX (cover)
do we really need more House of M spinoffs? four years after the fact, we still have Bendis' 2005 puppy yapping at us, and Bendis doesn't even own it anymore. this time, we have the evil anti-Dr. Strange Parker Robbins (commonly known as the Hood), putting together all the supervillains who want to make the easy buck (where did i read that before?). this reads so much like the current storylines, except they're up against the mutant majority, and i don't really see this heading anywhere except the morgue. just to keep you interested: Wolverine guest stars next issue. of course, this will be the Wolverine before he remembers anything so expect hacking and slashing.

what Steve Rogers can't do ...

... Old Man Logan can!

i'll let the part where he knows the codes to the Iron Man armor and flies it to California (and the fact that it still has juice in it, long after being on display in the Red Skull's trophy room), slide, just for this wonderful Steve McNiven splash page.

bring on the giant-sized conclusion! (also known in the Marvel offices as "k-ching!")

calling security

theyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy're baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!

well, the title at least, and its an all-new crew, albeit one we have not seen before (by "we" i mean those of us who read Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest - shame on you!!!). after those two multiple-issue, cash register-overloading storylines, there's no other way to go, except forming a new Guardians of the Galaxy. yes, space-spanning sci-fi opera is back in season (R.I.P. Battlestar Galactica).

for those who were born when Kurt Cobain was on top of the world, the original Guardians of the Galaxy had these pioneers, whose cute avatars are shown below:

that's from left to right, Major Vance Astro (alternate timeline counterpart of Justice), Martinex, Charlie-27 and Yondu. for other members who joined later, you can look 'em up here.

you're wondering why Astro has Captain America's shield - well, its a long story so go look it up somewhere. you know how to navigate the internets, right?

anyway, the new team (of sorts) was put together by Peter Quill (The Artist Formerly Known as Star-Lord and Now Known Again as Star-Lord), a fast-talking quick-drawing leader of men.

Peter had this bright idea that they should be prepared for the next cosmic problem, instead of just being thrown together all the time and improvising solutions. hey, Bush marched us into Iraq and created more problems, but that's neither here nor there.

of course, who would he recruit except the mates he fought alongside with in the aforementioned crossovers:

Phyla-Vell/Quasar, Quantum Band owner, lesbian lover (of the currently-deceased Moondragon)

the new, improved Adam Warlock (kind of a '90s throwback - oooooo, menacing, enhanced powers etc.)

Rocket Raccoon (& Groot) - yes, a talking raccoon; you got a problem wit' dat?

throw in a couple of half-surprises, like Gamora - The Artist Known as The Deadliest Woman in the Universe, and Nova's FB (but this state seems to be evolving) ...

... and Drax (the Destroyer), all-around badass. purged of his dumbness, he's killed Thanos and a whole lot of organic and techno-organic alien scum. so, better not get on his bad side.

for support staff, we have Mantis, the self-absorbed telepath/pyro ...

... and Cosmo, the Russian talking dog introduced in the Nova series. don't ask me how he talks. he just does. and he's Russian. da.

too bad Nova isn't part of the team, but it makes sense because he's got his own book, and he's too good of a character to just be part of the ensemble (uh, New Warriors, anyone?). i suspect they'll be crossing over frequently (especially after missions when Gamora needs some ... you know).

between the original team and this new incarnation ... i'd go for the one with the raccoon. and Gamora (hoooo-haaaaahh!).
