Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne #5 (DC)
"Masquerade"
Grant Morrison
Ryan Sook
Mick Gray
Pere Perez
Jose Villarubia
Jared Fletcher
Travis Lanham
Andy Kubert/Ryan Sook (covers)
what we learned: Bruce reappears in late 1920s Gotham as an amnesiac and is hired to play a detective in a movie, or actually investigate the death of his own mother. turns out the lady who hired him is probably his real mother and its all a ploy to sacrifice the 'man-bat' (oh hey there you are again, Dr Hurt or should i say Thomas Wayne).elsewhere/when, Red Robin prepares the JLA for Batman's arrival, which should blow them all out of existence.
oh shit moment: what's really up with the Waynes?
what's next: Batman 1000000 (or something) is back!

you know he's gonna say that at some point.

escape club

drive-by readings

Batman #703 (DC)
"The Great Escape"
Fabian Nicieza
Cliff Richards
Jared Fletcher
Ian Hannin
Tony Daniel (cover)
Kevin Nowlan (variant cover)

what we learned: drawn by that '60s crooner (oops, no, its Richards, not Richard!), this prelude to the return of the original Bats has Damian being prepped for "would you like to know your crime crusading pop a little bit more"? while corralling a jewel thief, a nod back to very rich, if blurry, period in Batman lore.
oh shit moment: oh Vicki Vale, you are a woman scorned.
what's next: Bruce, come back already!

three guys, one cup.

snaps: Batman #700

... where Grant Morrison and a bunch of artists craft a time-tossed tale that's not the Return of Bruce Wayne. whodathunk? anyhoo, anything related to time and history is Morrison's bailiwick so i end up going whoa several times during the read. and he certainly puts it out there that Damian IS going to be the Batman soon (wait, how does Terry McGinnis figure into that when Bruce is still alive in McGinnis' time?). ok, maybe in some alternate branch of reality. or Bruce is just reaaaally old. whatever. added bonus: various pinups by major talent (love Shane Davis' and Juan Doe's), and a Batcave tour courtesy of Freddie Williams II.

you know the implication, right? Joker's CHOKING THE CHICKEN.

weren't those his staves during his time as Nightwing?

like they needed any more rumors about their relationship

I, blogging.

McGinnis? Terry McGinnis? is that you??

but who's watching your teef?

aaaaaaaaaaand ... he's back.

drive-by readings

The Return of Bruce Wayne #1 (DC)
"Shadow on Stone"
Grant Morrison
Chris Sprouse
Karl Story
Jared Fletcher
Guy Major
Andy Kubert (cover)

now this is more like it. regardless of how shabby Bruce Wayne's exit was, circa Batman R.I.P./Final Crisis, Grant Morrison's follow-up, Batman & Robin, and now, The Return of Bruce Wayne, is kind of an atonement and are definitely must-reads. it must've looked silly when we all heard about Bats inhabiting different personas as he travels back in time. Cap'n Bat Sparrow? am down with that.

then again, without the preceding storylines, we wouldn't get this.

i like the way Morrison weaves in threads of the Batman mythos into the overall story, and am sure it will be a constant theme all throughout this six-issue series.

and now we know why he's in a cave.

"hey, where you at" may not be exactly what prehistoric tribes used to say in greeting, but it works somehow. Bruce finds a new family of sorts with the deer tribe, not realizing the impact they would play eventually on his destiny.

whatever era a Batman may find himself in, there will always be a Robin of some sort.

and since this is back in the day, who else would the resident bad guy be except Vandal Savage? Morrison's cheats a bit in that Bruce has his utility belt and has some gadgets to use. but is he changing time with all of these encounters?

am not too high on Chris Sprouse's art, because he reserves his best work for Tom Strong LOL. i mean, they had to plug his new series with this book. but hey, its a thrill ride. get onboard!

... where the best part is the cliffhanger. and it involves a cat. and some body fluids. this is not in-continuity??

holy crap, Alfred is taking this stitching thing too far.

'Ba-puke-met' just saw the light. or maybe Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

let us NOT read too much into this dialogue. move along now.

Twitter?? bitch, that thing's so 2009!

and that means Arthur was peeping. and probably filming. TMZ alert!!!

Bats can't believe Baphomet was fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugly as shit.

Bruce hates it when he can't read Dick.

snaps: Catwoman #83

... where we have the requisite Blackest Night crossover. is this a one-shot deal? the original Black Mask comes back to haunt Selina, and even with help from her little friends in Gotham City Sirens, this battle may have even more damaging consequences. man, i miss Adam Hughes covers on Catwoman (Jim Balent slowly shaking head at me).

zero points for originality, Black Mask; somebody already did that.

somebody mistakenly believed in Luke Wilson and AT&T.

really, there should be a Blackest Night video game. should be as fun as Left for Dead or Dead Rising.

awwww, look who needs more practice in Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Warrior Nun Areala, anyone?

why you hate Brand New Day

... because it gives you numerous throat-gagging scenes like this:

so far the only rule left in the Marvel Universe is that Uncle Ben stays dead. but people keep forgetting the corollary to that rule: Aunt May stays alive. always. and she's getting a lot more nookie than you, faithful reader!!

as expected we have spinoffs from the main X-titles, after the bright idea of putting all mutants in the world in one island and have their own country that isn't named Genosha.

and what do you know? this title seems much more appealing than the regular series.

one thing i kept missing from the X years of yore are the little stories like Christmas ghosts or baseball games that our merry mutants used to have in their Westchester grounds. with much change executed in the direction of the X-Men in the last decade, none has been a lot more intriguing than uprooting them from New York and moving them west. although their San Francisco tenure lasted less than expected, at least the Marvel brain trust didn't send them back and instead got them their own island. as to how long this is going to last, your guess is good as mine. but the potential for new stories is huge.

take for example the incorporation of Magneto finally as a valuable ally and a vital component in running their own country instead of fighting for territory and philosophy. i always missed having him as a wise, grizzled teacher of the next generation (with the rug getting pulled out from under me twice - alleged brain surgery by Moira and that Xorn nonsense), but i wouldn't say those years of fighting him were wasted (he probably now laughs at "Brotherhood of Evil Mutants") because it made him who he is and left him respecting the X-Men. we can't have him fighting them all the goddamn time until i'm dead. goddammit, this is the way to grow and you better not turn back the clock, Marvel. i'm warning you.

my favorite part is the Iceman story. the always happy-go-lucky Bobby Drake, who thankfully got over his long episode of emo crap after hooking up/breaking up with Mystique. does anybody remember that he "hooked up" first with Emma, when she was first brought into the X-fold and she controlled his body and powers, leading him to the realization that he's a fucking Omega-class mutant, and snowballs and ice slides are for losers? now he's back to being the sole joker of the team - Hank has gotten his own case of emo and thinking about ditching the team, while Warren cuts the checks and cuts the bad guys, moonlighting in the X-Force black ops team. he has the young ones to torment, but the best, priceless target? nobody else but the stuck-up Namor. we can make a sitcom out of this.

in one volume, we get a lot of layers - Logan and Kurt fetching apparently a truckload of fuel for Utopia, and making a fun road trip out of it, Magneto coming to grips with his past, and his admission of weakness and impatience in the negotiating table (he probably started more wars than the US did), the stupidity of throwing your weight around as a 'supervillain mutant' (the Toad, still living in 1963), Iceman throwing the jokes but also reining it in as his carelessness with words gets the better of him. by the way, is Dr. Kavita Rao the only human on the island? i liked the construction of Hank's science team over the last two years and bringing back my favorite character from the long-dead Alpha Flight, Madison Jeffries. however, if Hank leaves, it won't be the same.

also, the specter of the dead is touched on. Colossus, as expected, still pines for the lost Kitty Pryde. at least he's not blaming Scott this time, just like he did when Illyana died. as Illyana returned from the great beyond, and even himself, Piotr still has to believe that someday Kitty will too (yo, Agent Brand, any updates on this?). Jean Grey? well, who knows? the thing about this is that, without her death, Scott would not have become the ultimate leader (hah! that's the next book in the Ultimate Comics line) that he is today, taking the reins from Xavier, making all the right gutsy calls (and earning Wolverine's respect) and banging a hotter babe. sorry, Jean; thanks for the sacrifice (and by the way, you pushed for it anyway) - this time its a lot more meaningful than the first time around.

this anthology of stories makes a lot more sense than Necrosha. even if this series ended up with just more Iceman razzing Namor in 198 different ways, it'll be worth it.

i guess its been a while ...

... was it Selina? or Talia?

i mean, good Lord - look at those eyes! Bruce Wayne is practically salivating at the thought of having a female in his manse. as we all know, his playboy persona is a facade, and he really doesn't get any action!

anticipation and excitement are very, very weak words to describe Bruce's state of being.

before you say it's another one of his regular dates, let me present, Silver St. Cloud.

the name practically oozes sex. or porn. whatever. Batman has butterflies in his stomach. the Batman.

and she calls him "Deedee". WTF-?! is that a code word for something?

drive-by readings: Batman #688

next time i'm not running the marathon in costume!
Batman #688 (DC)
"Old Sins Cast Long Shadows"
Judd Winick
Mark Bagley
Rob Hunter
Ian Hannin
Jared K. Fletcher
with the new Batman out in full swing across the Bat titles, i must say the best of the lot is Grant Morrison's Batman and Robin. Judd Winick does a second tour of duty on the main title, and he aims to delineate what the classic Bat villains are up to - the Penguin's sneakily using his power-broker role to grab some himself, and Two-Face's apparently back to his old evil persona. the latter has recent history with Dick Grayson/Nightwing, and he seems to know the new Batman is none other than Grayson himself. i am not much enamored of Mark Bagley's art as i was when he was Marvel-exclusive (Thunderbolts, Ultimate Spider-Man) - looks kinda rough here, but maybe that's what they wanted to set the tone of the book to.

Thursday, May 21, 2009

that's it?

Dick is Bats? somehow the journey to get to this point now leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

so the Battle for the Cowl was just one big brawl between the former Robins. what was Jason Todd's point? will Robin still be Tim or Damian? Gotham City is like a cross between 2004-2006 Baghdad and 1990s Mogadishu - they should just relocate the people and wipe it off the map (didn't they try once to boot it out of the US during that earthquake crossover?). what the hell. why. what.

i'm blabbering like an idiot. Bruce, heelllllp!!!!

/somewhere out there, Bruce scrawls on a cave wall: "can't help you. busy hunting food."

time space warp ... now!

ok, the proper call is "time space warp ... ngayon din" which is the mixed Tagalog/English dubbed episodes of the classic Japanese live fantasy TV show Shaider. but this post is not even about Shaider (but i was curious, and it turns out the cast/show fell on some hard times). this post is about turning back the clock ...

... courtesy of Darwyn Cooke, late of the Batman/Superman Animated series and Catwoman, and current brains behind Justice League: The New Frontier, a look back at the '50s incarnation of the JL (now available on DVD, Blu-Ray and On-Demand. HD-DVD ... well, kinda.). in line with that, they came out with a New Frontier Special, featuring three stories and storyboard art.

Cooke, a protégé of the now-legendary Bruce Timm, has the art down pat, harkening back to simpler times. but one thing in common with the modern era ... Batman still kicks Superman's ass. big time.

whether in the past, present or future, elseworlds or box-office, Batman PWNS Superman

the general idea is that superheroes started appearing much around the same time. Superman, being the embodiment of the American ideals, was pretty much a public (and idolized) figure. Batman, being the hardcase that he is, pretty much kept to the shadows although his methods rang loud enough to be noticed by the Man. and i really meant the government, not Superman (although am sure he also did).

even in those times, Bats already had Kryptonite. so sending Superman in to rein in the Dark Knight doesn't really work.

that kind of attitude led to racism, didn't it?

only the timely intervention of Diana, a.k.a. Wonder Woman, and the voluntary unmasking of Batman, leads to better understanding among the triumvirate, and in doing so, cements them as the cornerstones, the backbone of the Justice League in eras to come.

are we sure its just her "spirit" that's "buoyed"? i kid, i kid.

the second story is a team up between Batman's protégé (and in some circles, boy love - ewww) Robin and the Flash (still known as Kid Flash). a Chickie Race turns out to be the link to some saboteurs who want to assassinate the President (pretty heady stuff). of course, kids can fix those kind of problems. you just gotta trust them.

i'm not sure a teenager should be riding bikes, but that's just me

the last story will appeal to women and feminists (what, there's a difference?): Wonder Woman goes on an anti-man crusade and Black Canary tags along to keep her out of trouble.

who you calling a pig? oink!

here's what she thinks of you, Hugh Hefner. you better jack up on the viagra run for your life now.

and who do they find in this disgusting den of iniquity? why, its that good-for-nothing, playboy Bruce Wayne!

the few times he actually tries to enjoy himself, and he's busted.

so in effect, what Cooke is trying to tell us here is: Women's Lib was started by Wonder Woman herself.

with a cameo by Gloria Steinem, who can't help but smile?
