coming out to play

drive-by readings

Shadowland: Power Man #2 (Marvel)
"War In the Neighborhood"
Fred Van Lente
Mahmud Asrar
Scott Hanna
Bruno Hang
Dave Sharpe

what we learned: now i get why the Simster was raving about this yesterday - only old school guys will probably get the joke. the new Power Man (Kid?) gets into a tussle with Danny and Luke (the original), and in the process draws attention from a bunch of gangs (well, really, just a representative) who's out to bag him for money. hilarity ensues.
oh shit moment: this kid can absorb Danny's chi? really? wait, shouldn't Danny be out like a light now? remember mind melds and that healing shit (when he first "died"; thanks a lot, Captain Power).
what's next: Nights-s-sh-sh-shade! (to the tune of "Shirt Tales")

uhhh .... she's ... Bejeweled?

who's killing who

drive-by readings

Shadowland: Blood On The Streets #2 (Marvel)
Antony Johnston
Wellinton Alves
Nelson Pereira
Frank Martin
Dave Sharpe
Francisco Mattina (cover)

what we learned: Paladin gets punk'd by the Shroud (gotta hand it to Pig Pen). Misty finds out that its not the Hand that killing mobsters, the Hand ninjas also tell her the same thing, and Paladin and Shroud are also two steps behind.
oh shit moment: not much sighting of Silver Sable and her fantastic treasure chest this issue. still not sure what her angle is in this story, but do i care? LOL
what's next: always the first question to ask in a murder mystery: who profits?

the "K" disappears twice in this book. that's a crime!

alone in the dark

drive-by readings

Curse of the Mutants - X-Men: Smoke and Blood (one-shot) (Marvel)
Simon Spurrier
Gabriel Hernandez Walta
Dave Sharpe
Clayton Crain (cover)

what we learned: i love the adventures of the X-Science Team. its like watching Big Bang Theory for mutants, with Dr. Nemesis gleefully playing Sheldon. too bad Hank's not with them for now. anyhoo, their vampire specimen breaks out of their lab and traps them with it. as is with any superhero team worth their salt, a last-minute save thrillingly traps us in our seats. Kavita Rao is becoming a likable character in her own right, considering her mutation opposition origins.
oh shit moment: if vamps can learn to use psychic attacks, who knows what the else they got up their sleeves.
what's next: what happens when the X-Men meet Team Edward?

what she said.

walking on sunshine

drive-by readings

Curse of the Mutants: Blade one-shot (Marvel)
"The Light at the End"
Duane Swierczynski
Tim Green
Nathan Fairbairn
Dave Sharpe
Dave Wilkins (cover)

what we learned: why is Blade in Frisco, cozying up to the X-Men? well, he learned he's not the only Daywalker around and his crew of vampire slayers folded faster than an origami championship ensemble. and current big evil kahuna Xarus let it slip that they like mutants. a-ha.
oh shit moment: did i mention that posse of Blade's which went down faster than a waterfall? the Skrull Kill Krew would last longer. or Team Jacob.
what's next: if they were going to remake the Blade movie (historically, Marvel's first big movie hit) for the new generation, who would you want to play the role? Nelsan Ellis? Jaden Smith? that kid in Everybody Hates Chris?

freaks and geeks has been renewed!

the nail

drive-by readings

Shadowland: Daughters of the Shadow #1 (Marvel)
Jason Henderson
Ivan Rodriguez
Jorge Maese
Dave Sharpe
Jean-Baptiste Andreae (cover)

what we learned: since when did Colleen Wing have a mole on her upper lip? did you know that? i didn't notice. anyway, if anyone's wondering where the other half of Knightwing Restorations has gone to, well wonder no longer. she's in line to lead the female assassin branch of the Hand called The Nail. there's like dozens of jokes that can be made out of that but i won't go there.
oh shit moment: for a moment there, i thought Misty and Colleen were gonna throw down.
what's next: you wanna nail The Nail? (sorry)

man, that's some cold attitude. what, you ran out of backing boards, geek?

street fighting

drive-by readings

Shadowland: Blood On The Streets #1 (Marvel)
Antony Johnston
Wellinton Alves
Nelson Pereira
Frank Martin
Dave Sharpe
Francisco Mattina (cover)

what we learned: the first time i saw The Shroud, he was involved in Latverian politics and Henry Kissinger. the last time i saw Paladin, he had that Spear of Odin thingy and went off his merry way after Siege. now they're both in this Shadowland spinoff moneymaker. apparently someone is offing bad guys and all signs point to Daredevil and his Hand ninjas. the Shroud and Misty Knight feel something's not right, but we don't know what Paladin's thinking. he shot Daredevil once from long range (look who can't do that!) so he might be looking for a repeat performance. i think this is all just confusion (par for the course) - they'll all team up and fight the common enemy in the end.
oh shit moment: i haven't seen Silver Sable's chest in years. oh mama.
what's next: Pig Pen, Robot Arm and the two mercs duke it all out, to provide entertainment for Lord Daredevil.

why, because she's better looking?

Reed Richards is a fraud!

didn't you defeat Galactus??

and now you prefer clean-up duty rather than taking on a Celestial?

snaps: Hercules - Twilight of a God #1

... where in the future, Hercules is a drunken buffoon and his family makes fun of him for being so. things don't change much, do they?

in the future ... bluetooth earpieces are still symbols of DOUCHEBAGGERY.

what's a steriod, pray tell?

man, i only hope i die young. this is embarrassing.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

snaps: Sensational She-Hulk (one-shot)

... where we celebrate Jen Walters' 30th anniversary with three tales, notably from greenskin powerhouse writer Peter David, plus a reprint from the John Byrne days, but surprisingly none from Dan Slott. however, i enjoyed Brian Reed's contribution, set in pre-Secret Invasion days, where there's a titanic team up, with the now-we-know-she's-the-Skrull-Queen Spider Woman.

what? how can you say that about your original costume?

hello, Yancy Street Gang!

Carol never likes taking her pills.

also, she's been selling Toyotas and it eventually came back to haunt her.

really?? (of course, duh. its Peter David just being cheeky)

Jen survives 10 Screamin' Greenie Weenies.

and the obligatory Dan Slott cameo. oy!

snaps: Cloak & Dagger #1

... where one of my favorite couples headline a book (albeit a one-shot) after so many years, but as appended to the X-Men/Utopia mythos. Tandy Bowen, otherwise known as the hot knife that melts my butter, thinks she's a mutant and she's not accepting of the fact that she may not be, given her longing to belong. she has to make the decision to stay or go, driven by her longtime association with Cloak (who's also having his own should-i-stay-or-should-i-go issues) and their future as a tandem, rather than as part of a bigger team.

Tyrone's favorite mashup? A Clockwork Orange/Jersey Shore.

does Theo Epstein know about this?

waittaminnit -you're gay!! (which they point out two pages later)

hmmm ... The Void, anyone?

ok, stop with the mind games. have they or have they not been doing the horizontal mambo for years?

x marks the spot: so close, Santo, yet so far away.

he's a lady!!

Thor is, according to Hulk.

and oh, Internet? please enlighten me. since when was the Hulk deemed worthy of lifting or carrying Mjolnir? unless this was Clor?

snaps: Ms. Marvel #50

... where we say goodbye to Carol's almost 4 year series run, by celebrating with a punch up with the original Captain Mar-vell. ok, no its not the original joe, but the 96th one. heh. and ends up with the requisite "where do i go from here" talk with casual date Spider-Man. and she ends up morphing into an exotic Latina/Black chick. hey, is that still Mystique??

shouldn't Mystique be dead by now?

whoa! green puke alert!!

explosions galore and not a costume rip. don't give me that Reed Richards unstable molecule crap.

the only explanation is that Mystique replaced her. gimme my No-Prize!!

snaps: Iron Man vs Whiplash #1

... where somebody wants to get a jump in for next summer. also, we learn two things about Tony Stark:

1) he has no command of any decent Russian, despite being a man of the world. unless he knows the Red Guardian is Yiddish?

and ....

2) he DIDN'T INVENT FACEBOOK. ZOMGOMGOMG!!!!!

clearly, I NEED to get a new hobby.

brand new ways to die

yeah - i mean, why not??

thanks to Bullseye's creativity (eat that, i-make-promises-i-can't-really-keep-so-my-wife-dumped-me Clint Barton!), we are treated to new methods of killing. they should make a History Channel documentary on this, or update it if they already had.

ever tried tossing Paris Hilton's poodle at someone? no? well, damn you better try it sometime. it could be fun.

next, we have Death by Corndogs!! don't tell the good folk at Nathan's and the Coney Island Boardwalk, or we'd have a massacre on our hands!

as for the comic, Brian Reed said it best: "What the Fuck is this Shit all about??"
