coming out to play

drive-by readings

Shadowland: Power Man #2 (Marvel)
"War In the Neighborhood"
Fred Van Lente
Mahmud Asrar
Scott Hanna
Bruno Hang
Dave Sharpe

what we learned: now i get why the Simster was raving about this yesterday - only old school guys will probably get the joke. the new Power Man (Kid?) gets into a tussle with Danny and Luke (the original), and in the process draws attention from a bunch of gangs (well, really, just a representative) who's out to bag him for money. hilarity ensues.
oh shit moment: this kid can absorb Danny's chi? really? wait, shouldn't Danny be out like a light now? remember mind melds and that healing shit (when he first "died"; thanks a lot, Captain Power).
what's next: Nights-s-sh-sh-shade! (to the tune of "Shirt Tales")

uhhh .... she's ... Bejeweled?

shadowboxing

drive-by readings

Shadowland #3 (Marvel)
Andy Diggle
Billy Tan
Victor Olazaba
Christina Strain
Guru eFX
Joe Caramagna
John Cassaday/Laura Martin (cover)
Tan/Olazaba/Guru eFX (variant cover)

what we learned: with the Ghost Rider sent by the Kingpin to rile things up in Shadowland, it basically turns a testy dialogue into an all-out punch-a-rama, broken up only by the guns of the now-unFrankencastled Punisher. Daredevil, miffed that his minions are not even worthy of battling the Pet Avengers, goes out to find his champion (hint: his name begins with a B and he's dead). Master Izo, the wiseass pint who started this shit in the first place, tells the heroes of the true power behind everything, because that dude right there is no longer Matt Murdock. well, let's see if Moon Knight can take him (oy, your woman's messed up).
oh shit moment: aside from Shang-Chi realizing he's not all that cracked up to be, it probably was when i realized who the hell Matt was digging up. nice revival there, Marvel. death never really means anything - they never try anymore.
what's next: Daredevil gets hornier. just to point out too, that because of scheduling issues, Shadowland #3 jumps in front of whatever you are reading about FrankenCastle, Shadowland: Moon Knight, and Shadowland: Daughters of the Shadow. hey, what are the odds that Bullseye is gonna be the next Man Without Fear?

Shang Chi never felt so embarrassed, not even during his first cancellation.

scaredy cats

drive-by readings

Avengers Academy #3 (Marvel)
"Scared Straight Part 1: Boyfriend In A Coma"
Christos N. Gage
Mike McKone
Andrew Hennessy
Jeromy Cox
Joe Caramagna

what we learned: story title notwithstanding (somebody still likes Morrissey), it only pertains to a few pages, where like Rogue put first love Cody in a coma, rich princess Hazmat (Jenny) puts boyfriend Greg in a hazardous chemical situation, which brings us to today where she wants her can't-touch-anyone situation rectified, even if it means killing Norman Osborn to get the answer. good thing, they're visiting The Raft. which is fun, because all the current Thunderbolts are currently displaying positive reinforcement attitude for impressionable kids.
oh shit moment: as much you may be shocked to know that Speedball (nee Penance, nee Speedball) is still cutting himself, my preferred moment is just when Valkyrie's about to reveal to the girl students what sort of device mortal craftsmen have made for satisfaction of the female urges without turning to a male, Tigra (yeah, the poster child for healthy sexual behavior) cuts into our fun. boooooooooo!
what's next: go get Thunderbolts #147 for another POV of what really happened here. and did they get the truth out of Osborn?

good thing Danny's rich, 'cause this could be an expensive sexual harassment case. oh, wait ...

rolling to the edge

drive-by readings

Daredevil #509 (Marvel)
Andy Diggle
Antony Johnston
Roberto De La Torre
Matt Hollingsworth
Joe Caramagna
John Cassaday/Laura Martin (cover)

what we learned: Master Izo and Elektra infiltrate the Snakeroot HQ and find out who's pulling the strings. apparently, they have no teleporting device and Matt's not exactly answering his Droid X. so they need to get back to the States by foot. meanwhile, Typhoid Mary shows up at Matt's door, ostensibly to work for him and work him, if you know what i mean.
oh shit moment: anybody seen the new-look scruffy Iron Fist? awesome!!
what's next: something exploded in Shadowland, and i doubt if it was the ninjas who had polished off the burritos for lunch.

then there was that time Master Izo joined Takeshi's Castle (Wipeout for you Americans)

heart of darkness

drive-by readings
man, with the LeBron James reality show, fighting Burning Maniacs and Spiderants in Borderlands, the oppressive heatwave in the East Coast, and this little thing called the day job, i didn't have time to do anything with the funnybooks. trying to correct that ... right about ... now.

Shadowland #1 (Marvel)
Andy Diggle
Billy Tan
Batt
Christina Strain
GuruEFx
Joe Caramagna
John Cassaday/Laura Martin (cover)
just like the Stark Tower before it, a new skyline attraction has sprouted up in Manhattan in the Hell's Kitchen district. the Stark Tower, despite being built only a few years ago has been destroyed and rebuilt several times already, probably at a rate not even the original Avengers Mansion endured. will Shadowland go through the same thing?

not if the Avengers have anything to say about it. the Big Three thinks its a blight on the landscape and on the Heroic Age they're trying to establish. Luke Cage and Danny Rand, more of street-level heroes than most and with stronger ties to Matt Murdock, prefer to give him the benefit of the doubt. considering they don't really know what the devil Matt's doing with it (or whatever his endgame is), that's pretty much a big leap of faith, and this series will explore how that's going to turn out.

welcome to this summer's crossover du jour (Second Coming is ending, so what else is out there?). Andy Diggle puts his stamp on Daredevil by placing him in Punisher territory, with the difference being he didn't start out like Frank Castle did. it certainly intrigues the fans as to how this thing will end - has The Hand really changed Daredevil, and will he turn a heel for the foreseeable future? or will he make a last-second turnaround, make the sacrifice play and destroy the Snakeroot once and for all? for Daredevil followers like me, it does make me happy to see the Snakeroot back, and to see Bullseye get the royal asskicking he richly deserves since getting a bullseye carved on his head back in the Bendis run. the last page is an obvious homage to the Frank Miller era. their costumes, now eerily similar, poses the question of "what's the difference between them now?".

not a big fan of Billy Tan, and this reminds me why. he's mostly competent, but there are times when things seem off (like long limbs and weird faces?). that's fine though; it won't dissuade my interest. i'm going to follow Matt down this dark path, and see where it takes him.

only the shadow knows

this summer, the pages of Daredevil explode as his very own event, Shadowland commences. that's good news for Foggy because he's kinda missed being the collateral damage in his pal Matt's everyday adventures with the Hand and the Kingpin and your everyday street crime.

Marvel has been releasing teaser images in recent weeks, and we would be remiss (oh, you can't imagine how much we've been remissing) not to take a look at them. and praise them. and make smart-ass comments. minus the 'smart' part.

right off the bat, we're suspicious of this cover (let's assume it is). how many times have we been scammed, bait-and-switch tricks pulled on us, with such fantastic-looking covers depicting events that never really happens in the actual book? i mean seriously. if you're making a cover, we expect it to be a snapshot of what's going on inside. for all we know, the story's about Spidey and the Punisher holding hands, hopping along Ninth Avenue while eating Italian ices. WTF, dude.

speaking of the Punisher ... does this mean some magical event is going to restore Frank back to his original human dick self, completely eradicating Frankencastle from our memories? definitely, this isn't the Punisher MAX version. maybe he makes a deal with Mephisto too? or maybe kill off the useless Parker (Robbins, The Hood) and comes back to life. i want a rematch with Daken!!!

one more thing about that cover: hope Pete had Reed and Tony make him some bulletproof duds (passphrase is "unstable molecules"). that's easier than Spider Armor eh?

how much you wanna bet there isn't much of a throwdown here? unless Cage and Fist are still thinking "you're a goddamn Skrull, lady, and we're taking your head off!", this is one of those scenes where they preen and posture, and then decide to work together. The Heroic Age: Back to Status Quo.

Clayton Crain's bombastic covers doesn't always translate well to interiors, and there are days that the black ink threatens to cover everything just like that Gulf Coast oil spill. see Necrosha.

Ghost Rider's hasn't been back to the Big Apple since World War Hulk by my reckoning, so not sure what he's doing here. maybe its to test the mettle of the newest Secret Avenger, Reverend Syung Mun Moon ... i mean Moon Knight. after all, its a battle for the soul of Khonshu. what? its a battle for the soul of New York?! bummer.

i immediately recognized the cover, and it should have been re-done by somebody else - Clint Langley, Alex Maleev, Marko Djurdjevic, even Clayton Crain. if you're going to ape someone else's cover that previously signified heartbreak and loss, i don't think anime style is going to cut it. not Niimura's style anyway. maybe he could have done it in black and white?

so what is the point here? Elektra's mourning the loss of Matt's soul, right when he took the leadership of the Hand, promptly joining the Dark Side? doesn't look like she's mourning though. maybe she's pissed because she was supposed to be the Hand boss. then that whole Skrull thing happened ...

now these are the coolest teasers of them all: Wolverine holding up two trophies - one's Bullseye and the other a Hand mask (or maybe that represents Daredevil - who hasn't had a good night's sleep since Bendis started writing him). the ace of spades in his neck is a nice touch, though it shouldn't appear on the second image. not unless Bullseye got his mask ripped off (first image), takes a fallen Hand ninja's mask and tosses another card at Logan's neck, and ending with the same disastrous results (second image).

should be a very interesting summer for DD and his fans (of course i'm in!).

drive-by readings: Immortal Iron Fist #27

Immortal Iron Fist #27 (Marvel)
"The Fall of the House of Rand"
Duane Swierczynski
Travel Foreman
David Lapham
Timothy Green
Juan Doe
Javier Rodriguez
Nate Piekos
Kaare Andrews (cover)
Ariel Olivetti (variant cover)
i'm not sure who the best rich dude playing superhero in the 616 universe is: Tony Stark or Daniel Rand. between the two of them, they should've solved cancer, AIDS and the Israel/Palestine question by now. instead they've been distracted saving us from bigger world-beaters (true) time and time again, and now they've both been stripped of their companies. Danny still has his secret ID though, and despite the opportunity to do so, his list of conquests is modest, definitely not in Tony's league, and unlike Tony, he's ready to take the next step as a responsible human being. wait, Tony Stark just sent a text message saying he too, will settle down as soon as he takes care of that Green Goblin maniac running the USA.

back to Danny: his recent adventures have left his company vulnerable and as a result, his net worth has shrunk to Vern Troyer proportions. i would have preferred that Swierczynski painted a few more details as to the tumbling of Rand Inc., but that might be a boring exercise to some. i'm sure the destruction of his building (no insurance?) would qualify as a huge event and should be referenced in other Marvel books. i also liked the neat interspersing of flashbacks of an 8-year old Danny coming to grips with defining a relationship with his dad, building up to this point when he'd be in the same shoes. Luke Cage provides the support as a best friend would, and this is one of the enduring friendships in the Marvel Universe i'd never want to be broken, harking back from their Power Man/Iron Fist days.

as if i didn't like this issue enough, this is where i learned that they're gonna be issuing out Immortal Weapons one-shots for each of Danny's new pals (starting with Fat Cobra). excuse me because i need to change my pants.

pick me ups

wandering through a bookstore chain the other day, i left it with these in hand. yes, apparently, no matter how hard i avoid the regular comicbook shops, i am not safe from plunking money for these babies. dammit.

seriously, how can you go wrong with these? World War Hulk was a far better slambang actionfest than Michael Bay's Transformers, and equally mindless. wait, not really. there was a point to all that fists flying. it was the perfect excuse to destroy New York for the nth time, and since the Hulk didn't get to pick a side in Civil War, hell, let's have everyone take on him.

then we have the much-hyped (and deservedly so), JLA/Avengers, the crossover that everyone was waiting for their whole childhood. if anything, its always a treat to ogle George Perez' pencils. always.

last but not least, i couldn't resist picking up the latest Iron Fist TPBs. these things come out much faster than DVD releases (and its no wonder the trend has been, for years now, writing a story arc that would hold up well as a collected edition). no matter how much the Revolution has been whipping Matt Fraction on his new gigs (maybe deservedly so), i always be grateful he and Ed Brubaker teamed up to bring back one of my old faves, Danny Rand, to respectability. and what else can i say about David Aja's art? wow.

hope these babies will be Hancocked in the next few Comic-Cons. hoooohaaaaaaaaah!!!

(NYCC '09 back to dead of winter? boooooooooo!)

spies like us

i've always loved Iron Fist, despite his codename being such. i can't imagine a superhero being named Metal Ears (solid?), or Wooden Foot. it sounds American Indian (although my Indian name would probably One-Whose-Blog-Sucks-A-Lot, or just plain Sucks A Lot).

enough of that. let me present the very first Power Man/Iron Fist issue i ever got to read (although i've had a few issues of their separate series during those years as a snot-nosed dirty urchin in the Third World).

"Paths and Angles"
Steven Grant/Greg Larocque/Janice Chiang/Christie Scheele

our two friends have been whoring themselves as Heroes for Hire, with the thought that us ordinary joes should have access to superheroes (for a fee, of course). the concept has been represented well in the '90s (waaay too fantastic) and into this decade (covering the periods during Civil War and World War Hulk). but back then in the flamboyant '80s, Luke and Danny used to walk around Times Square (pre-Giuliani cleanup) and trawling for situations exactly like these:

of course today, you know Iron Fist and Luke Cage deal with worldbreakers with a lot more firepower and rep than Frankie the Smalltime Druggie. needless to say, it only takes Fist two moves to take him down (will ya look at that kick!).

the nun who gets slashed says she doesn't need this crap being slashed in Times Square, she needs to meet with a priest-in-exile before his "enemies" catch up with him (is she referring to kin of the children he molested? juuuuuuuuuuust asking). needlessly to say again, our bleeding heart heroes volunteer for the job while she's taken to the hospital.

what our heroes don't know, is that there's a Sister Act underway.

Fist and Cage wait for the priest, but he mistakes them for trouble (i would too! two he-men enchanted with yellow clothing?) and dives into either the Hudson or the East River (its all muck to me). expect skin problems later. it turns out the priest doesn't seem to be a priest, just like the nun.

and who's the nun? why, no one. i'll let the pics tell the story.

so questions are raised: did she set up the slashing at Times Square, or was that just a timely coincidence? what if Fist and Cage collared the so-called "KGPriest"? (ok, laaaaame joke ... KGBeast is headed this way) now Cage wants something to salve his wounded black pride.

and the hunt is on! at this point, i want you to remember details, dear readers.

first, they stop to watch a movie. ok, not really.

several informers later, the KGPriest meets Cage's fist.

Cage and Fist need to find out who are Skarkov's contacts. tossing the room yields an old theater ticket stub and an invite to the "African Native Arts Museum". which could actually be this one in Queens. because the one in Manhattan doesn't seem like a fancy place. or would have characters like these:

Stoneface doesn't mince words and sics the spy attendees (including a now-freed Skarkov) on Cage. a brawl ensues, which is always the fun in a PM/IF comic.

question: if they took the ticket to the museum, how could Skarkov (secretly freed by the fake nun Vienna) show up in the same place with no problems? does that mean he never needed a ticket in the first place?

there's a funny sequence where Cage engages in a pissing contest with an elephant. and gets his ass handed to him.

Danny meanwhile. does what he does best - ironfisting.

Stoneface escapes, and our heroes are left with a partly-demolished museum. and if you were paying attention, you know why Vienna is here - she's been following them all along.

Vienna drops the hint that she's looking for an auction, and it seems like Luke and Danny are the only ones oblivious to the strings attached to their body parts.

if you were paying attention part 2: the theater ticket was for a theater closed for years - and that's were Stoneface is holding his auction for smuggled goods. Skarkov arrives, but Vienna (paid by his bosses) lets him and most of the spies go. Stoneface goes onstage without an audience, and our heroes, proud of themselves for figuring out the hideout, present themselves to administer a beating.

Stoneface thinks he could get away, but that usually is not the case.

so Vienna gets $25,000 from her US bosses, a relatively-same amount from Skarkov's bosses, another $10,000 from Stoneface ... well, well, who's the bandit in this story? meanwhile, Cage teaches Stoneface the fine art of an American smackdown.

and just when you think you're gonna get paid ...

if you were paying attention part 3: this one's a cold bitch.

Cage and Fist get presumably less than $2000, as a 'standard fee' for heroes for the masses would not be in that territory. they should be called hard luck heroes, and stories like these are a lot of fun - kinda along the lines of the great down-on-his-luck Peter Parker/Spiderman stories.

these two had a rebirth of sorts over the past few years, with Cage getting his due as a heavyweight Avenger and getting the girl (thank you, Brian Bendis), and Danny reclaiming his mantle as renaissance martial artist of the modern world in the hands of Mr. Matt Fraction.

cliffhanger of the week #9

#7 - I Don't See The Light

what is our resident DC rapist up to? no good, of course. attempting to burglarize Superman's fortress only results in a beatdown by Batman. trouble is, where did Dr. Light disappear to? DC Nation wants to know!
Superman/Batman #43 (DC)
Dan Abnett/Andy Lanning/Mike McKone/Jonathan Glapion/Rebecca Buchman/Jason Wright/Rob Leigh

#6 - Show Me The Money

hey, superheroes need to send kids to college too. can you imagine how much pampers and twinkies and toys cost? its enough to drive a man to crime! and if you're the Flash, it'll be so easy!
The Flash #238 (DC)
Tom Peyer/Freddie Williams III/Tanya & Richard Horie/Travis Lanham

#5 - We Started the Fire

aside from a big explosion, a gun to the head of a protagonist or a protagonist's loved one is definitely cliffhanger material. and so it is found here in Robert Kirkman's long-running zombie epic, where much blood is once again spilled with the evil Governor's assault on the prison survivors. poor Rick Grimes. just can't catch a break.
The Walking Dead #47 (Image)
Robert Kirkman/Charlie Adlard/Cliff Rathburn/Rus Wooton

#4 - Kids Don't Play Nice

the point of the Initiative was to train superpowered kids in the use of their powers. so far all they've done is get manipulated by scheming adults and fight each other. right now, a formerly-dead MVP is wiping the floor with the Initiative recruits, and in a desperate gambit to use a clean MVP clone to use against the bad one, the kids run into the Justice-led New Warriors, who think doing the right thing is enough, so they have to do some posturing. basically, there is no difference between kids and adults when it comes to pissing contests.
Avengers: The Initiative #10 (Marvel)
Dan Slott/Christos N. Gage/Stefano Caselli/Daniel Rudoni/Joe Caramagna

#3 - Secret War

the war between the Penguin and the Whale is heating up. this is just like Happy Feet duking it out with Free Willy for the kids' attention at the box office! woooohooo!! and in between, a bird gets shot ... TFCKANW (the former Robin currently known as Nightwing). wooohoooo!
Gotham Underground #6 (DC)
Frank Tieri/Jim Calafiore/Jack Purcell/Mark McKenna/Brian Reber/Sal Cipriano

#2 - Danny's Got A Plan

yes, those words do not fill me with confidence either. but at least something's about to blow up, because i kind of got letdown with the pseudo-Mortal Kombat tournament they were hyping a few issues ago. please ... its time for more punching and kicking, less talking.
The Immortal Iron Fist #13 (Marvel)
Matt Fraction/Ed Brubaker/Tonci Zonjic/David Aja/Kano/Matt Hollingsworth/Artmonkey Studios

#1 - Time to Die

when you reach #49, you better make sure you got a cliffhanger. and Robert Kirkman knows this too well. Mark Grayson faces a grave betrayal, and we can't wait for next month to arrive.
Invincible #49 (Image)
Robert Kirkman/Ryan Ottley/Bill Crabtree/Rus Wooton
