Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne #5 (DC)
"Masquerade"
Grant Morrison
Ryan Sook
Mick Gray
Pere Perez
Jose Villarubia
Jared Fletcher
Travis Lanham
Andy Kubert/Ryan Sook (covers)
what we learned: Bruce reappears in late 1920s Gotham as an amnesiac and is hired to play a detective in a movie, or actually investigate the death of his own mother. turns out the lady who hired him is probably his real mother and its all a ploy to sacrifice the 'man-bat' (oh hey there you are again, Dr Hurt or should i say Thomas Wayne).elsewhere/when, Red Robin prepares the JLA for Batman's arrival, which should blow them all out of existence.
oh shit moment: what's really up with the Waynes?
what's next: Batman 1000000 (or something) is back!

you know he's gonna say that at some point.

drive-by readings

Batman & Robin #14 (DC)
"Batman and Robin Must Die! Part 2: The Triumph of Death"
Grant Morrison
Frazer Irving
Pat Brosseau
Frank Quitely (cover)

what we learned: not one to be overshadowed or upstaged, the Joker wants to get back at the Black Glove/Thomas Wayne/Dr. Hurt/whatever the shit's calling himself these days. to this end, he has Batman and Robin (and the Commish Gordon) as chess pieces, and Gotham City and its residents as collateral damage. wheeeeeeeeee!
oh shit moment: Damian getting himself captured by the Joker. that'll work wonders with his confidence.
what's next: i want the current Dynamic Duo get out of this without the Bat family getting involved. ok, maybe Alfred.

after years of rejection, Miss Piggy finally snapped.

bullet day, i will giant you

drive-by readings

Batman #702 (DC)
"Part Two: Batman's Last Case"
Grant Morrison
Tony Daniel
Ian Hannin
Travis Lanham

what we learned: the missing details of how Batman disappeared over Final Crisis/Batman R.I.P. and got stranded in time. the smartest man in the universe figures it all out as he gets Omega Sanction-ed. Darkseid makes it the trap for the ages and something you can't get out of, but Bats inadvertently creates a hole in it by killing Darkseid with his magic bullet.
oh shit moment: Scott Free, i think you should give up your title as the Universe's best escape artist.
what's next: do you know what my next cologne is? its Essence of Bullet.

Batman lost braincells on his trip backwards in time, he couldn't even spell his name.

Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne #4 (DC)
"Dark Night, Dark Rider"
Grant Morrison
Georges Jeanty
Walden Wong
Tony Aviña
Travis Lanham
Andy Kubert (cover)
Cameron Stewart (variant cover)

what we learned: Bats meets up with Vandal Savage once again, this time in the old west, and the latter has teamed up with Thomas Wayne (ok, this plot has been thickening since Batman R.I.P.) to find a mysterious box. they've even hired Jonah Hex to take care of this Bat Ghost.
oh shit moment: Hex guns down the Bat.
what's next: Bruce is back ... in the modern world. with the box. the very thing that Superman et al were trying to prevent.

you win this round, Hex, but not the box office!

snaps: Batman #700

... where Grant Morrison and a bunch of artists craft a time-tossed tale that's not the Return of Bruce Wayne. whodathunk? anyhoo, anything related to time and history is Morrison's bailiwick so i end up going whoa several times during the read. and he certainly puts it out there that Damian IS going to be the Batman soon (wait, how does Terry McGinnis figure into that when Bruce is still alive in McGinnis' time?). ok, maybe in some alternate branch of reality. or Bruce is just reaaaally old. whatever. added bonus: various pinups by major talent (love Shane Davis' and Juan Doe's), and a Batcave tour courtesy of Freddie Williams II.

you know the implication, right? Joker's CHOKING THE CHICKEN.

weren't those his staves during his time as Nightwing?

like they needed any more rumors about their relationship

I, blogging.

McGinnis? Terry McGinnis? is that you??

but who's watching your teef?

drive-by readings

The Return of Bruce Wayne #1 (DC)
"Shadow on Stone"
Grant Morrison
Chris Sprouse
Karl Story
Jared Fletcher
Guy Major
Andy Kubert (cover)

now this is more like it. regardless of how shabby Bruce Wayne's exit was, circa Batman R.I.P./Final Crisis, Grant Morrison's follow-up, Batman & Robin, and now, The Return of Bruce Wayne, is kind of an atonement and are definitely must-reads. it must've looked silly when we all heard about Bats inhabiting different personas as he travels back in time. Cap'n Bat Sparrow? am down with that.

then again, without the preceding storylines, we wouldn't get this.

i like the way Morrison weaves in threads of the Batman mythos into the overall story, and am sure it will be a constant theme all throughout this six-issue series.

and now we know why he's in a cave.

"hey, where you at" may not be exactly what prehistoric tribes used to say in greeting, but it works somehow. Bruce finds a new family of sorts with the deer tribe, not realizing the impact they would play eventually on his destiny.

whatever era a Batman may find himself in, there will always be a Robin of some sort.

and since this is back in the day, who else would the resident bad guy be except Vandal Savage? Morrison's cheats a bit in that Bruce has his utility belt and has some gadgets to use. but is he changing time with all of these encounters?

am not too high on Chris Sprouse's art, because he reserves his best work for Tom Strong LOL. i mean, they had to plug his new series with this book. but hey, its a thrill ride. get onboard!

snaps: Batman & Robin #11

... where the past and present collide - man, those Waynes were such douchebags, much more than the Starks! these rich people. anyway, Robin is unfortunately being remote-controlled by his mother (oh, those mothers!) and we are still one issue away from truly finding the answers on what Dick found in the secret cave, and if Oberon Sexton is truly the missing Bruce or just a scented dandy.

* hey, so after like a year or so, Bruce is probably going back and reclaim his costume, and Dick goes back to being Nightwing, and for all of that, we had that atrocious Battle for the Cowl??

aside from being an arrogant twit, you're fine!

huh? aren't you talking about yourself?

but they do have 99 luftballoons!!! eeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!

ah, Deathstroke, still batting .000 for killing someone of real significance.

and for the question y'all wanted to ask ...

answers in 30 i guess ... because Morrison wants to stick it to the Eisner Award committee!!

snaps: Batman & Robin #10

... where this title picks up steam again since its first 4 issues. is Bruce Wayne really alive? ("yes.") will Damian stay on as Robin? ("cannot predict now.") will Talia succeed in her schemes? ("don't count on it.") is Thomas Wayne the Devil? ("reply hazy, try again.") how will this all end? ("better not tell you now.")

move over, Tim Geithner; there's a new genius in town!

but, but ... the wifi is so slooooooow. sir.

Teen Titans? he'd be lucky to be accepted in Young Justice!

a-ha! the next clue is in Rihanna's birthplace!

this is for taking my father's mantle, you circus oaf!

Batman & Robin #6 (DC)
"Revenge of the Red Hood, Part Three: Flamingo is Here"
Grant Morrison
Philip Tan
Jonathan Glapion
Alex Sinclair
Patrick Brosseau
Frank Quitely (variant cover)
ok, they weren't left in compromising positions but then again, letting the Red Hood get drop on them is a minus for the new Batman and Robin. by the same token, the Red Hood getting careless and getting ambushed by the Flamingo - heh, and you want to replace Batman?? and thus it ends with Jason getting hauled off to jail (the character seems lost and misplaced, aside from being a perennial story device for shock purposes), Scarlet leaving Gotham in better shape, Flamingo apparently dead, Robin half-paralyzed (yeah sure) and Dick probably taking steps to rethink his strategy. and what's this Oberon Sexton angle? art is pretty uneven this issue, which is why i still miss Frank Quitely.

drive-by readings

Batman & Robin #5 (DC)
"Revenge of the Red Hood, Part Two: Scarlet"
Grant Morrison
Philip Tan
Jonathan Glapion
Alex Sinclair
Patrick Brosseau
Frank Quitely (variant cover)
now this is more like it. Gotham is about to explode (like when was it not in that state?) - from gang wars and vigilantes. this is the issue where the Red Hood and his new partner, Scarlet, humiliate the new Batman & Robin. is it really Jason Todd under that red bucket? he looks more like another DC character who's name escapes me (think ... red hair, white streak ... ahhh shit, when you get old ...).

my kudos to Grant Morrison for the Eduardo Flamingo character ("Buffalo Bill"?) ... a sicko who skins and eats people's faces ... and is the premiere assassin for a drug cartel, and doesn't shirk away from the color pink. whooooooooooooo! he's like the sixth Village person!

but what i wanna see is, how the Hood leaves the discombobulated duo (really? Bruce wouldn't be taken down like that, would he?) in a situation where they might not get away "...with their dignity intact." would they be in their wedgied underwear and masks only? were they left in compromising positions and TMZ paparazzo are on the way? i wanna know!!

with Alex Sinclair doing the colors, Philip Tan's artwork is getting its sea legs (still some Kubert in there though). let's see if that applies to this story arc and beyond.

Batman & Robin #4 (DC)
"Vengeance of the Red Hood, Part One: Red Right Hand"
Grant Morrison
Philip Tan
Jonathan Glapion
Pete Pantazis
Patrick Brosseau
Frank Quitely (variant cover)
hey, where's Frank Quitely? noooooooo ... do not just put him on covers. pleeeeeeeeeaaaaassssseee! i want me my Frank Quitely!!!!!!

so there's a new (?) Red Hood running around Gotham, with a survivor of Pyg's experimentations in tow. is it Jason Todd, because for the life of me, this is one sick puppy - he can't even decide who he wants to be. will somebody just put him out of his misery? guy needs to get laid!

or Batman could just sit back and let the Red Hood clean up things (you know Damian would never sit back and not get down and dirty) before finally stepping in and twisting that red pail around his neck.

either way, Gotham's goons are screwed. oh wait, did Red Hood just shoot at Batman? Civil War! Dark Reign!

still bummed out that Quitely isn't drawing this. is he coming back?

drive-by readings: Batman & Robin #3

Batman and Robin #3 (DC)
"The Circus of Strange"
Grant Morrison
Frank Quitely
Alex Sinclair
Pat Brosseau
Tony Daniel (variant cover)
if Christopher Nolan was somehow unavailable to make the next Batman movie, can we go back in time, pluck the '90s Quentin Tarantino (with '90s Robert Rodriguez) and get them to helm the thing based on Batman & Robin? because this is how the book plays out. the two leads cut a glorious figure, Gotham's protectors reborn to save them from the crazies. what makes Damian, the new Robin, both annoying and fun to read, is that he has balls 3x the size of his dad's. wonder what happens when Bruce finally comes back from his unintentional exile. as for Dick Grayson, how long before he breaks out laughing in front of Commissioner Gordon and reveals his identity? i mean, its bound to happen, right? right??

i'll bite: who's this presumably, new Red Hood? who's watching Alfred? will that girl survivor of Pyg's experiments haunt Damian for not saving her? are we gonna see the Joker anytime soon? when did the Batmobile suddenly become a right-hand drive vehicle?

the universal accolades are flowing in, and Batman R.I.P. is quickly disappearing over the horizon. suddenly, i don't long for Bruce Wayne coming back at all. and that's probably the highest compliment i can give Grant Morrison.

drive-by readings: Batman & Robin #2

no, i am not threatened by your pizza!
Batman and Robin #2 (DC)
"The Circus of Strange"
Grant Morrison
Frank Quitely
Alex Sinclair
Pat Brosseau
Andy Kubert (variant cover)
"didn't they used to be taller?" a cop asks Commish Gordon early in this issue. one of the so many little nuances (circus slang, circus freak villains, referencing Bludhaven) that Grant Morrison adds to the emerging panorama of a new Batman and Robin trying to put a semblance of normality to their current upside-down world. as if Dick Grayson didn't have enough to worry about playing Batman, he has the additional headache of babysitting a headstrong Damian, son of Bruce via Talia, whose blatant disrespect of Dick has him ending up in the clutches of the Pig. this seems to be Morrison and Frank Quitely's version of All-Star Batman and Robin (heh), and just like their Superman take, this one promises to be a great ride - and delivers.

D&D makes debut

that's "Dick and Damian" to you under-the-rock-hiders and the upset masses who left in droves when their beloved Bruce Wayne was shuffled off this mortal coil.

and the new adventures of Batman and Robin is (still) being brought to you by the man who killed him, no less. Grant Morrison's deconstructionist methods to our costumed heroes may be like pulling teeth (and even worse for some), but somewhere there are rainbows (unless editorial issues a fatwa and retcons everything right after - Exhibit A: Magneto/Xorn). once you get past the painful WTF!? parts and stop scratching your head, you'll see where he's going. yeah, there could be a million other ways to get to point B, but Morrison is Morrison. take him or leave him.

with Battle for the Cowl ending up a big landfill just to answer the simple question of will-he-or-won't-he, Dick Grayson now dons the cape to honor his patron. can't wait to see him meet Bruce's old rogues gallery, and the Justice League, in his new duds.

we can now say it: Batman is a Dick!

as annoying as Damian can be ... it is intriguing to have him take on the Robin mantle. i already expect him to disobey Dick at the first opportunity, and get his ass whupped by whoever's handy. Talia and Ra's Al Ghul must be so proud.

the new face of brat. bratboy, his name is.

i liked the fact that Dick is now mentoring his former mentor's true son. given Damian's sense of entitlement, this will undoubtedly produce a lot of drama in the series.

the new storyline reintroduces the duo back to an embattled Gotham City in dire need of its known protector. new menacing villains such as Pyg and Toad dot the landscape, and gives Morrison a new sandbox to play with, and co-conspirator Frank Quitely fits in well in Morrison's worlds (see All Star Superman).

Morrison has no fear incorporating ridiculous and silly elements, such as a flying Batmobile (hell, why not? bats fly!). he even gives us flashbacks to the campy Adam West years such as this:

upset masses, come back. forgiveness is divine.

conniptions. not.

looking back at last year's Con, i had a blast and then some. then they moved it back to February. i demand answers, Fenster Man! well, not anymore really. as long as you keep that October 2010 promise. that's a long, long wait. but it probably means i'll be a lot more inclined to keep the streak going.

let us revisit one of my best moments last year. yes, this was before the blogosphere blew up because of Final Crisis. if i knew back then ... naaah, its cool.

-----

but little did i know, my redemption would come in the form of a Scottish badass.

look at this. doesn't he look like a badass?

Morrison has been a hero to fanboys and counterculturists everywhere with his works. he swings both ways, writing edgy fare like The Invisibles and Big Dave, and weaving epic superhero tales in All Star Superman and JLA.

so it is a little disappointing that for a specific price tag, you can have something like this:

that's for a private audience with the man. i am not shelling out $200, not if you can catch him in the DC booth.

cost of NY Comicon Weekend ticket: $45
remaining value of lost subway ticket: $65
overpriced hotdog for lunch: $5
surviving the line cut for the Grant Morrison autographing session: priceless.

all fired up

the God of All Comics has created his fair share of comicbook bastards - Cassandra Nova, Dr. Hurt - but the one i keep checking back on is Prometheus, who made his spectacular debut almost 11 years ago, cleaning the JLA's clocks. replacing a young hero named Retro, who won the "Be a Justice Leaguer for A Day" contest, Prometheus easily infiltrated the JLA moonbase (with the global media on hand, no less), took down the heroes one at a time (including Batman), and was on the verge of humiliating Superman himself if not for his balls' timely introduction to Catwoman's whip, who wasn't even supposed to be there in the first place.

he tried this gig a second time, as part of Lex Luthor's Injustice Gang, but Bats "cheated" by reprogramming Prometheus' helmet to contain the fighting skills of Dr. Stephen Hawking, who could certainly at most beat up a fly if he wanted to.

the more recent sightings of Prometheus didn't seem to be as interesting and as badass as before ... and now we know why. the Prometheus running around these days isn't the original.

Prometheus downloads 1 Exabyte of porn - into 1 single disc.

following the stunt pulled by Batman, the only way they could prevent Prometheus from coming back and kicking their asses again was for J'onn J'onzz to mess with his mind, to trap him from within. i wonder how that is different from Zatanna mindwiping villains (Identity Crisis) and Bats/J'onn reacting the way they did. anyway, the death of the Martian Manhunter triggers a "prison break" of sorts - the real Prometheus, drooling in an isolated cell in Blackgate Penitentiary, regains his faculties and walks out of there faster than you can say "they finally cancelled Prison Break! woooohoooooo!!"

"and how do you like your cable/internet, Mr. Prometheus?"

the real deal checks his hideouts, finds out someone has been using his identity to spitshine his rep by - gaaahhhh! robbing banks! tracking his doppelganger is rather relatively easy, removing some competitors along the way. and when i say "removing" it involves severing of body parts.

"this wasn't the half-off sale i expected ..."

the fake Prometheus turns out to be his protege, who lacked the creativity and brilliance and sinister fun edge that the original had. as the fake goes up in flames, we are treated to hints of delicious violence as Prometheus promises revenge on the Justice League (sans J'onn) ... and that's scary news.

illustrated by relative newcomer Federico Dallocchio, who maximizes the use of panels, Faces of Evil: Prometheus, is a bang-up reintroduction to a character who should have been a major major player the first time around.

why dick should be bats

at the beginning of Batman R.I.P., we were treated to this:

with the hype leading up to the launch, fanboys started speculating who would wear the mantle of the Bat if the powers that be sidelines Bruce Wayne (c'mon, will there never be a Batman?). now that Batman R.I.P. has concluded (with much gnashing of teeth, i assume), the world is bereft of a Batman (this just after ruling the box office last summer). so who's gonna put the hurt on the Bat rogues gallery?

well, ok, that was just cheating - a mere hallucination triggered by the always-ambivalent Harvey Dent. but still.

the stigma of being the first (heeehee) Boy Wonder still shadows Nightwing, but he has paid his dues after all these years. he's the backup plan when the JLA goes down, and he doesn't have the hangups of his mentor. just tell he won't be growling intelligibly a-la Christian Bale. and if this is just one long big gimmick (Bruce Wayne was hiding in his head all along?), it would be intriguing to see Nightwing wear the cape for awhile.

Dick Grayson FTW!

Battle for the Cowl starts ... oh, just get on with it, DiDio. 'fess up, you're copying Ed Brubaker's Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes star turn on Captain America.
