prom here to eternity

Avengers Academy #13, where we have the Red Skull dancing with another long-lost daughter!

kidding aside, this is a sweet issue, as the new Avenger kids have their first prom, and chaperoned by Hank Pym and Tigra. how time flies! wasn't it just long ago that Hank was boinking Tigra? wait, that was Skrull-Hank. i mean, wasn't it long ago that young Tigra was hanging out in the WCA? actually that had no bearing whatsoever. other comments:

  • Speedball. DJ. "Take My Breath Away". awesome. (double awesome for Young MC. i hope it was "Bust A Move".)
  • the gym where the prom was held was probably a self-repairing one, because with at least three altercations occurring during the dance, the punch bowl seems to refill itself.
  • this is the only time Mettle (why did they design him to look like Johann Schmidt? why??) can boast of breaking Iron Man.
  • Justice - Firestar = me sad. me love Kurt Busiek Avengers run.
  • in a team, there should be a maximum of ONE character with "BALL" in his codename. Hardball and Speedball, duke it out in the corner.
  • there should be more interaction between Marvel characters ("Marvel Team Up", anyone?). example, Striker and Hellion could meet up and out-jackass each other.
  • did they design adult Reptil to look like Humberto Ramos? because uh, his name is Humberto? (i love me some Humberto Ramos!)
  • Katy Perry+prom = "Firework". what, no "Peacock"?? aw, c'mon!
  • finally, Real Hank + Tigra = sexytimes.
  • apropos to above, Jocasta may have something to say about that. and that word may be "Ultron".

Avengers Academy #3 (Marvel)
"Scared Straight Part 1: Boyfriend In A Coma"
Christos N. Gage
Mike McKone
Andrew Hennessy
Jeromy Cox
Joe Caramagna

what we learned: story title notwithstanding (somebody still likes Morrissey), it only pertains to a few pages, where like Rogue put first love Cody in a coma, rich princess Hazmat (Jenny) puts boyfriend Greg in a hazardous chemical situation, which brings us to today where she wants her can't-touch-anyone situation rectified, even if it means killing Norman Osborn to get the answer. good thing, they're visiting The Raft. which is fun, because all the current Thunderbolts are currently displaying positive reinforcement attitude for impressionable kids.
oh shit moment: as much you may be shocked to know that Speedball (nee Penance, nee Speedball) is still cutting himself, my preferred moment is just when Valkyrie's about to reveal to the girl students what sort of device mortal craftsmen have made for satisfaction of the female urges without turning to a male, Tigra (yeah, the poster child for healthy sexual behavior) cuts into our fun. boooooooooo!
what's next: go get Thunderbolts #147 for another POV of what really happened here. and did they get the truth out of Osborn?

good thing Danny's rich, 'cause this could be an expensive sexual harassment case. oh, wait ...

Nation X: X-Factor #1 (Marvel)
Peter David
Valentine De Landro
Pat Davidson
Jeromy Cox
Cory Petit
Christian MacNevin (cover)
since i was unable to post anything on X-Factor #200, i'm making up with this, and throwing some love down once-and-present X-Factor scribe Peter David's way.

the biggest problem for X-Factor in recent months is the inconsistency and quality of the art, which more often than not doesn't complement the quality of David's writing. X-Factor #200 had an excellent variant cover by Kevin Maguire, and we can only wish he was handling the interiors as well. it may come off as Formerly Known as The Justice League, what with Madrox's insistence to operate as a detective agency (who's funding them again? Monet's trust fund?), but who cares? Val De Landro has been manning the fort for awhile, and his sort of spare-less-detailed-sort-of-sombre art may be fitting because David dragged the team through some dark times. but no offense, i think a Maguire-drawn X-Factor run (especially with the humor) would work well. imagine if he drew that whole "The Invisible Woman Has Vanished!" story?

that being said, De Landro does a passable job here mostly (note that faces get weird or disappear outright sometimes - but maybe that's not his fault), considering its a momentous event (for me at least) because its a reunion of sorts for the X-teams without being in the middle of a firefight or a crisis. David proves once again how adept he is handling the various X-characters, not just his X-Factor ones (and considering from his first run, i think only Madrox and Guido are the only ones remaining - Rahne is apparently pregnant and is not seen here). Shatterstar's innocently magnetic personality (to either gender) drives the powerless Rictor nuts. Madrox's reaction to Magneto's half-sarcastic declaration of 'welcome to the Brotherhood!' is 90% priceless (it would be a full 100% if Maguire was drawing it!!). Guido is still the rambunctious kid out of kindergarten and gels well with Rockslide. a Madrox dupe belting out a George Michael tune. even Longshot and Dazzler - whose short-lived star-crossed romance is part of the X-Men of my youth - gets a second chance here, and it is kinda heartwarming (and his goddamn luck holds!!!).

there's also this scene:

in just that one panel, David finds it best to give a nod to past confusing X-storylines, but at the same time not get bogged down by all that history. this is just friends being together, sharing a peaceful moment, after a long hard time. these moments never last in the X-Universe.

so where's the conflict here? not much really - a debate of philosophies between Scott and Madrox, and another precog of sorts making all sorts of warnings. (kinda like Destiny with her books, and Darwin getting into a tug-of-war and ends up being bailed out by Namor via some oral work with sharks. don't ask.) good for Scott that his faith to make all things work allows him to ignore potential futures, effectively telling us that he's try to plot his own destiny and the entire mutant race's.

absent that little conflict ... yes, its a nice little day in Utopia.

amazing editor

apparently, Comics Cavern's favorite DC editor got shipped to Marvel. it's unfortuante.

as for the book, well, i didn't care much for the revival of clone-related stuff, but its a bit refreshing to see Harry Osborn not insane or evil, consistently since the reboot. well, that is, until his loony dad gets de-pantsed and hauled off to jail or worse.

Stephane Roux (cover)
Mike Mayhew (variant cover)
you know, this would have worked a wee bit better without the opening statement, giving away what could've been a great surprise for newbie readers, and perhaps a great delight to longtime ones, as they would figure it out along the way (assuming they didn't read the internet or the "next issue" blurb from #602. anyway, it was enjoyable opener for a long term ... what? this story concludes next issue? what the hell! think of the possibilities! can we not have JJJ replaced? or Osborn! it could a year's worth of issues!

you can't say Norman Osborn's a waffler. once its decidedly apparent that Harry doesn't want to play the role of his American Son (after the big reveal of last issue), he takes him off the will and focuses on his yet-unborn child with Lily the Menace (gaaaaahhhh!). this means Harry is pretty much useless to him as a flower in a firefight. but Peter's best friend (seriously? all my years i never saw Harry give to Peter as much as Peter gave to him) has other ideas and narrowly defeats his pyscho pop. only Peter saves him from delivering the final blow (sorry, Logan), ensuring that the Dark Reign will continue well till the end of the year. take a bow, Joe Kelly.

gaaaaahhhhh! my eyes!! i need an industrial-strength eyeball washer after that ghastly cover. now i don't wanna be a daddy no more. damn you, Phil Jimenez!

last issue, we were made to understand that Norman Osborn shot Spider-Man (dressed as Venom) in the head, after getting caught infiltrating Avengers Tower. turns out here that the Venom costume as provided by Reed Richards is much tougher than most and saves Peter from another embarrassing unmasking (see: War, Civil). however, Osborn figures out the way to beat the unstable molecules based on Tony Stark's notes (the loser mandated the use of Oscorp technology post-Skrull Invasion, but here he is copping from StarkTech. tch. loser.). good thing Harry comes in to save the day ...

speaking of Harry ... well, what can i say? either he's the most unstable, unreliable dude in the world or he's just naive like its 1999. there's no room for any other characterization. somehow the revelation that that "Menacing" baby is not Harry's is thumbs up in my book, as Marvel puts the adult spin on these stories responsibly and not coyly like Ultimates 3. whether we can admit it or not, the Spidey brain-trust has slowly righted the ship (post-Mephisto deal).

Bullseye says: "what recession?"

if you could do that with your nose bacon, you don't have to file for unemployment.

oh, Spider-Man just infiltrated (pardon the sort of pun) the Dark Avengers (which will more or less end up still status quo).

and oh, did they just slide one right by our noses? naughty, naughty Sue! just because her husband has no girth and length hangups eh?
